Rest Day…Kind of…

Wednesday, July 2nd, 2008

Today is a rest day so no running today. I did go swimming as the Y during lunch. Did 200m warm up and then spent the rest of my time doing drills.

Received an email from Joe last night that he and Darrell have signed up for the St Jude Marathon in December. It will be great to see them again. Anyone else want to join us?

Daily Run

Monday, June 30th, 2008

I passed on swimming during lunch today. My excuse was I am “recovering” from the weekend tri. Sometimes, any excuse will do.

I did run 7 miles this afternoon. It was a great afternoon to run. Temperature was around 80, low humidity and the wind from the North West at 11 mph. We sure don’t get many days like today in late June.

Week in Review

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

Gayle was out of town this past week so I had to do double duty. Even thought the girls take care care of themselves, it seems to take longer when there is only one parent around.

Got in a couple of rides last week. Tuesday evening rode 20 with the Harpeth Bible Club. Also, made it to the pool four times. Swimming is still a struggle….maybe one day.

The warm streak continued during the week with the temperature in the 90s most afternoons. Thursday, I wanted to do strides but decided to be satisfied with just 8 miles without strides.

Saturday, I got up at 4 am and checked the weather radar, rain. So, I went back to bed and slept for an hour. Finally headed out the door around 6:15. About half way into the run, it started raining again. So much for trying to avoid the rain.

This morning, Amy met me at 5 to ride. It was her first ride with clipless peddles.

This Saturday is the RC Cola and Moon Pie 10 miler. If I had not already signed up, I think I would do the Harpeth River Ride instead just to get some more time in the saddle.

Running in the 90s

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

No, this is not the title of a MTV retro show but rather a summary of this past week. The temperature was in the 90s every afternoon It is beginning to look like a repeat of last summer. The one “bright spot”, if you can say that when the sun is beating down on you, was that there was a good breeze from the South.

Welcome To Summer

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

We turned a page on the calendar and on cue, the heat and humidity arrived to Middle Tennessee. I hope this summer is not a repeat of last year’s long hot summer.

BikeClinic

Sunday, Amy and I attended a Bike Skills Clinic put on by the Harpeth Bicycle Club. It was a small group and we got in lots of practice. We had to join the club in order to attend but as Amy said, the clinic was worth the membership fee.

Continue to swim at lunch. If nothing else, I hope just spending time in the pool will at some point help me become more comfortable in the water. Since I finally signed up the the McMinnville City Triathlon, I have to be ready for a longer swim.

Today was a recovery run but I did include the quarter mile hill in the neighborhood, felt that I needed to start getting some hill work in to be ready for the Moon Pie 10 miler.

Training for the week
Sun: Bike Clinic
Mon: 7 miles – 1:04:25, 9:11 pace, 700m swim
Tues: 5 miles – 46:15, 9:13 pace, swim – drills

Acclimating

Friday, May 30th, 2008

It has felt like summer this week. It was been in the upper 80s. I know it will get hotter this summer but right now I’m just trying to get acclimated to the the heat. It will just take time.

When I got home this afternoon, Sara was about to head out the door to run. I told her if she would wait for me to change, I would go with her.

We headed out and she too struggled in the heat. She dropped off after a mile and I went on to run 3 more.

Good Luck to Michele who is doing a half Iron tomorrow in Georgia.

Full Week

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

Have had a full week at work and of training. Made it to the Y at lunch the last 4 days to swim. I’m feeling a little better about the swimming but I still have a long way to go.

Last Saturday I went with Amy to look at bikes. She ordered one and it came in Wednesday. We were out riding in the neighborhood and I had my first experience of what happens when you clip out on one side and then your weight shifts to the side that is still attached….you fall helplessly into the road in front of the truck you were trying to avoid.

Am taking today off…should be a nice long weekend. The weather forecast looks great for the GJCC Tri Monday.

Training for the week
Sun: Bike – 13 miles
Mon: 7 miles – 1:04:07, 9:09 pace, 700m swim
Tues: 5 miles – 43:50, 8:45 pace, 700m swim
Wed: 700m swim
Thur: 8 miles – 1:14:55, w/8 x 100m strides, 9:20 pace, 700m swim

Got A Spot

Tuesday, May 13th, 2008

Last year I did the GJCC Tri on Memorial Day. When I finally got around to signing up in late April for this year , the race was closed. So I added my name to the wait list. Yesterday I received a word that I was in. Sure am glad that I have been swimming at lunch. It is a good beginner race ( 200m pool swim, 8.5 mile bike, 2 mile run) so it is not surprising that it is popular.

Training for the week
Sun: 8 miles w/ amy – 1:27:05
Mon: 5 miles – 43:20, 8:39 pace, 700m swim
Tues: 5 miles – 43:28, 8:40 pace
