Chicago Marathon Training – Week 15

Perfect! I really don’t know a better word to descript Saturday’s run.

It was the last 20 miler before Chicago. I knew that it would be my last chance to gage my readiness for the big day. One of the things I have found hard this summer is how to actually gage my progress. With temperatures in the 90-plus range most of July and August and high humidity, I have wondered how that will translate to performance when the weather turns more moderate. Saturday I got my answer.

Left the house early and headed out. It was 56 degrees with the wind from the North at 10 mph. It felt great and was the first time I wore a shirt rather than a singlet since Spring.

When I start out early, I take a headlamp that I can clip on the bill of my cap that I use when I run the greenway before sunrise. When I don’t need it, I clip it to my fuel belt. About mile 5.5, I adjusted the fuel belt and the headlamp fell off. I stopped to try and find it but was not about too. After a couple of minutes, I stopped my watch while I looked for it. (My Gramin reports mile 6 at 10:23 but BIM does it math differently, therefore the higher lap time for mile six.)

Just as I was starting mile 19, I saw my friend Joe and stopped for a minute or so to speak to him and meet his running buddies.

Looking at the splits, I am really pleased and encouraged. Now I just hope and pray for cool weather in Chicago on October 7.

With the Pfitz plan, the taper is not as sharp as in the Hidgon plans, so I know that I still have some work to do but I feel like I’ve made it over the hump.

Let the taper begin!

This is a very, very solid 20 mile run, David. And, if we take out the distraction and time of losing the head lamp, it is even better. You’ve toughened yourself well during a tough summer.

Here’s hoping for better weather on Oct 7!!

  2. Michele Says:

Wow! What a great run. We haven’t even run our first 20 miler. I am so jealous.
Glad you were able to find you headlamp.
